Top Defence women recognised

Federal Labor congratulates two of the Australian Defence Force’s top performers after they were recognised at the 2015 Telstra Australian Business Women's Awards on Wednesday night.

Captain Mona Shindy RAN has spent more than 25 years in the ADF as a warship weapons engineer and was last night named the Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year.

Captain Shindy also currently serves as the Chief of Navy’s first strategic adviser on Islamic cultural affairs, helping to promote better understanding between Defence and the Islamic community.

Captain Shindy joins Brigadier Georgeina Whelan who was named the 2015 Telstra Australian Capital Territory Business Woman of the Year.
Brigadier Whelan is the Director General of Garrison Health Operations.

“Congratulations to these two brilliant women who are leading the charge to break down barriers and bring about cultural change,” Ms Brodtmann said.

“Australia has a world class Defence Force thanks to bright and inspiring personnel like Captain Shindy and Brigadier Whelan.

“We can all be proud of the work that has been done in recent years to increase flexibility, inclusivity and diversity in the ADF.

“Inclusion is crucial to Defence’s ability to operate at peak performance and demonstrate maximum capability.

“That's why it's fantastic to see women like Captain Shindy and Brigadier Whelan achieving national recognition for their outstanding work.”
