Standing up for Canberra

The Chronicle: NDIS

When Canberra became one of the first cities in Australia to trial the National Disability Insurance Scheme, we did so with a great sense of optimism and hope.

We realised its life-changing potential for people with disability and their families and carers. And the opportunities it offered through choice

Fast forward to today, and too many Canberrans just feel let down.

Since Summer, I’ve heard countless, heart breaking stories about frustrations with the NDIS - the lack of consistency, transparency, consultation and communication, persistent IT problems, poor quality or changed plans and delays.

A recent report found more people are withdrawing from the NDIS than signing up to it due to a process described by the Ombudsman as unwieldy, unapproachable and lacking fairness.

The NDIS was designed to transform the lives of people with disability and their families and carers for the better.

We have got to make this work.
