I applaud the many local families, businesses and community groups that have supported the effort to rebuild Australia’s flood affected regions.
Prime Minister Gillard has announced that an estimated $5.6 billion is needed to rebuild these regions, with the vast majority going on rebuilding essential public and community infrastructure destroyed or damaged by the natural disaster.
Two-thirds of that funding will be delivered through savings from within the government’s budget. The other third will be provided by a temporary and modest one-year levy.
Canberrans are great volunteers and we respond to other Australians in times of need. It’s part of being an Australian citizen and responding to a massive disaster.
