Standing up for Canberra

Public service cuts causing financial hardship in Canberra

The Member for Canberra Gai Brodtmann has expressed her concern over the Abbott Government’s public service job cuts after a number of Canberra postcodes topped the mortgage stress list.

The Canberra suburbs of Kambah, Greenway, Oxley and Wanniassa have been listed as the most at risk of mortgage default in the country.

It follows a study by consultancy firm Digital Finance Analytics that mapped the postcodes across the country where people could face financial collapse when interest rates start to rise.

“This is particularly concerning news and reaffirms my fears that the public service job cuts are having a devastating impact on the Canberra community,” Ms Brodtmann said.

“The study states that the most difficult thing for a mortgage holder is suddenly losing your job.

“These statistics are proof of how hard the Abbott Government’s 17,300 public sector job cuts - 8,500 in Canberra - have hit southside families.

“The Abbott Government has complete contempt for the public service and Canberra.

“I will continue to stand up for public servants in Canberra - and fight against these attacks on our local community.”
