Standing up for Canberra

More cuts to public service

The Abbott Government has again shown its contempt for the Australian Public Service by abolishing 175 government agencies and bodies in the Mid-year Economic and Fiscal Outlook statement released today.

Worse, the government cannot even say how many public servants will lose their jobs as a result of this callous decision.

This latest round of public service cuts come on top of 16,500 job cuts in the May Budget and the downsizing of major agencies like AusAID.

“This is devastating news for many Canberra families as we head into Christmas,” Ms Brodtmann said.

“The ACT is already facing its highest unemployment rate in 13 years.

“Treasurer Joe Hockey is kidding himself if he thinks these cuts won’t hurt our community.

“This latest round of cuts confirms once again Liberal Governments are bad news for Canberra.”

“Just last month Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed the ACT lost 7,200 federal jobs during 2013-14, coming as the steepest downturn recorded in any state or territory in recorded history,” Senator Kate Lundy said.

Member for Fraser Andrew Leigh said the cuts were short-sighted because work done by agencies like the Australian Government Solicitor would now have to be outsourced to expensive private firms.

“This is likely to mean job losses today but no budget savings in the years ahead,” he said.

Dr Leigh called on ACT Liberal Senator Zed Seselja to do the right thing by Canberra’s public servants and fight these harsh new cuts.

“Hopefully Senator Seselja will wake up over Christmas and finally stand up to his party about their relentless attacks on our community,” said Dr Leigh.

This is Tony Abbott’s and Joe Hockey’s Budget disaster – and they are entirely responsible for it.
