Gai Brodtmann, Member for Canberra today welcomed home and congratulated James Stannard of Kingston and Stewart Boswell of Waramanga on their performance at the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Ms Brodtmann said the 2010 New Delhi Games were a resounding success for Australian athletes. Australia won 177 medals - 74 gold, 55 silver and 48 bronze - 76 more than our closest competitor.
James Stannard competed in the Rugby 7s team and received praise during the matches. He was touted as one of the best players on the team.
Stewart Boswell played a competitive game in the Squash Doubles at Delhi and came close to winning gold for Australia.
“Congratulations to both James and Stewart on a great performance at the games. Australia is internationally renowned for its focus on sports and James and Stewart should be proud of what they have contributed. They are a credit to Canberra,” Ms Brodtmann said.
“All the Australian athletes have once again proved why we are the envy of the world when it comes to sporting success and I congratulate all of them.
“Throughout 10 days of gruelling competition the athletes never lost the smiles on their faces.
“As well as success on the sporting field, the Australian athletes also donated $30,000 in money and uniforms to Indian charities.
“The money and uniforms will be split between three charities that provide health and sport leadership for underprivileged communities in India
“This is a wonderful gesture of friendship from our young athletes who are great ambassadors for our country,” she said.
