Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Gai Brodtmann has today welcomed the release of the final Broderick Review report, which outlines the significant progress being made by the Australian Defence Force in the treatment of women.
Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick today released the audit report of the review into the Treatment of Women at the ADF - the fourth and final report of the Broderick Review into the Treatment of Women in the Australian Defence Force Academy and the ADF.
“Labor welcomes the findings of this audit, which show that the ADF has made significant progress since the review was first commissioned in 2012,” Ms Brodtmann said.
“Every single recommendation of the Broderick Review has been progressed, and progress has been made across all three forces.
“This would not have been possible without the support of the Chief of the Defence Force and the Service Chiefs.
“Labor commends the CDF, the Chief of Navy, the Chief of Army, and the Chief of Air Force for their leadership on this issue.
“A diverse military where every member is treated equally and provided with pathways to leadership is important for a sustainable ADF.
“The findings of the Broderick Review demonstrate that the ADF is embracing change.”
Phase one of the Broderick Review considered the treatment of women at ADFA and was tabled in Parliament in November 2011. Phase two, which considered the treatment of women in the ADF generally, and pathways for women into leadership roles in the ADF, was tabled in Parliament in August 2012.
An audit report of the implementation of the phase one report was released in July 2013. The release today of the phase two audit marks the completion of this review.
“This ground breaking review represents one of the most comprehensive and detailed examinations of gender in any military in the world, and I’d like to thank Commissioner Broderick and her team for their dedication and commitment,” said Ms Brodtmann.
“I welcome the news that the ADF has invited the Australian Human Rights Commission to continue to support further cultural change in the ADF over the next four years.
“I also welcome the announcement today of the appointment of Julie McKay as the first Gender Adviser to the Chief of the Defence Force.
“Julie McKay is an excellent advocate for women and will make a significant contribution.” Ms McKay is the Executive Director of UN Women Australia and has been a member of the Secretary and Chief of the Defence Force Gender Equality Advisory Board since 2012.
