Member for Canberra, Gai Brodtmann today congratulated the 314 midshipmen and officer cadets who were welcomed into the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) at the Chief of the Defence Force Parade in Canberra.
Representing the Minister for Defence, Stephen Smith, Ms Brodtmann said the parade was an important milestone and symbolically represented acceptance into ADFA.
It also signalled the end of the cadets’ one-year familiarisation training, which has for the last six weeks involved living away from home at the Academy.
“The last six weeks has seen these young men and women make the transition from civilian to military life,” Ms Brodtmann said.
“Over this period of time these cadets have undertaken an extensive range of training, including weapons, marching and drill training, as well as team building activities, all of which is designed to improve teamwork and leadership abilities.”
For the next three to four years, the midshipmen and officer cadets’ lives will be devoted to military training and studying for their undergraduate degree from the University of New South Wales.
“These cadets should feel proud of what they have accomplished, and look forward to serving the nation as effective members of the Navy, Army or Air Force.
“I wish them the best of luck in furthering their military training and academic studies,” said Ms Brodtmann.
