Standing up for Canberra

Forward looking defence industries need certainty

Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Gai Brodtmann has congratulated the Defence Materiel Organisation on a successful 2014 Defence and Industry Conference, which she attended this week representing the Federal Labor Party.

“Australia has an innovative, world class Defence industry,” Ms Brodtmann said.

“But one of the key messages from the conference is that it is an industry in desperate need of certainty, particularly in shipbuilding.

“The Abbott Government needs to ensure Australia's highly talented and leading edge defence industries continue to grow and thrive. That means ending the uncertainty.”

The conference highlighted latest developments and trends in the industry, and included a special innovation forum hosted by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.

Ms Brodtmann commended CEO DMO Warren King on the work he is doing to improve inclusion in the agency, which was highlighted in his speech at the conference.

“I understand that DMO is introducing a range of measures to improve diversity across the agency’s activities, and I welcome that.”

While in Adelaide, Ms Brodtmann also met with Defence SA, Nova Systems, the Data to Decisions Cooperative Research Centre at the University of South Australia, the Defence Community Organisation, Defence Families of Australia, and received briefings on RAAF Base Edinburgh and 7RAR programs.
