Standing up for Canberra

Defence Staff left behind

Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Gai Brodtmann has called on the Abbott Government to end its attack on the pay and conditions of Department of Defence staff.

“Defence staff will not only see their real wages fall under this insulting offer, they will also lose a range of conditions,” Ms Brodtmann said.

“The Prime Minister is undermining the strategically important work of Defence staff by cutting their real wages.

“Defence Secretary Dennis Richardson has stressed the important relationship between Defence staff and ADF personnel.

“There is a bit of a tendency for some to see Defence civilians as constituting something called a ‘back-end’ supporting the ADF ‘front-end’…We have an integrated work force where many civilians report to uniformed personnel and many of the latter report to the former.”

"The greater the differential you have, between base salaries in the ADF and base salaries in the defence APS, the greater are the difficulties we are going to run into in terms of an integrated workforce,"

“The government now needs to reconsider its harsh attack on Defence staff and public servants more broadly.

“Labor will continue to stand against these attacks on the local economy, jobs and our community.”
