Defence Minister believes ADF pay deal is “fair”
During Senate Estimates today the Defence Minister David Johnston described the ADF pay deal as “fair” and “not a real pay cut”.
Shadow Minister for Defence Stephen Conroy and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Gai Brodtmann would like the Minister to explain how a pay rise of 1.5 percent is not a pay cut.
Over the past three years, ADF wages have increased by an average of 3 per cent every year.
This offer is half that at only 1.5 per cent – well under the latest CPI figure of 2.3 percent.
This is at the same time as we are asking our troops and our RAAF personnel to engage in combat and bombing raids in Iraq.
The Minister also admitted today he has not even picked up the phone to speak with Employment Minister Eric Abetz on this issue.
Labor opposes the Government’s clear disregard for this serious issue, and will continue to fight for a fair deal for our Defence personnel.
