Labor has today welcomed the commissioning of HMAS Canberra, the latest addition to the Royal Australian Navy.
The HMAS Canberra is the first of two Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships to be delivered to our Royal Australian Navy (RAN), and today’s commissioning marks an important milestone in the modernisation of the RAN Fleet.
The LHDs will deliver one of the most sophisticated air-land-sea amphibious capabilities in the world and will greatly strengthen the Australian Navy’s delivery of sea power.
The LHD project has been a bipartisan effort, managed across governments, and has demonstrated the effective participation and skills of our local ship building industry and workforce.
These new platforms are able to land a force of more than 2000 personnel by helicopter and water craft, along with all their weapons, ammunition, vehicles and stores.
The ships will also be able to provide vital humanitarian assistance, disaster response and civilian evacuation capabilities.
The second of the two LHDs is due to be commissioned in 2016, and will mark the completion of the two largest ships ever built for the RAN.
