Standing up for Canberra

Address in Reply

At the start of each new Parliament, MPs have the opportunity to make a reply to the opening speech of the Governor General. I used my Address in Reply for the 44th Parliament to praise my wonderful electorate of Canberra as an incredibly diverse city—something far from the dull, boring, monotonous, concrete jungle which is so often depicted.

I reminded those listening that when a government comes to power with a promise to substantially cut the Public Service, as the Abbott government has done, it must be aware that it is jeopardising the economy of the entire ACT and surrounding New South Wales.

I also took the opportunity to formally acknowledge the outgoing Governor General, the Honourable Quentin Bryce, AC, CVO, and to thank her for her continuous advocacy for women and for those less fortunate.
