Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Defence personnel honoured
Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Gai Brodtmann has praised this year’s NAIDOC Week theme of Serving Country – Centenary and Beyond.
“This week has been an opportunity for all Australians to honour the significant contribution of Indigenous men and women in the Australian Defence Force,” Ms Brodtmann said.
“At celebrations across the country, communities have honoured and reflected on the service of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander personnel who have fought in defence of this country.
“I was privileged enough to attend the inaugural NAIDOC on the Green event this week, where Canberra’s Indigenous and defence communities came together for a moving flag raising ceremony, and to hear about the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander personnel past and present.
“NAIDOC Week gives us the opportunity to come together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“As we approach the Centenary of ANZAC, it is vital that we continue to honour the historic and ongoing contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander personnel in the ADF not just this week, but every week.”
