Thank you Canberra (Canberra Chronicle, September 2013)

It is a great honour to be re-elected to serve as the Member for Canberra for another three years, and I look forward to continuing to represent, advocate and fight for you in my second term.

Over the last three years my community forums have provided an invaluable opportunity for me to hear direct from you about your needs, priorities and concerns. I’ll continue to hold the forums in neighbourhood centres in my second term. I’ll advertise them on my website, through the Chronicle, and send invitations to local residents. I look forward to your continued involvement in the forums.

I’ll also continue to be a strident ambassador for Canberra through a range of ways, including the Canberra Legends program. Canberra Legends are nominated by the community and celebrate individuals or organisations that have made an exceptional contribution to our city.

Once nominated, I use speaking opportunities in Parliament to sing their praises to the nation and put them down in history. I then present the individual or organisation with a framed copy of the Hansard, so they have a lasting acknowledgement of their achievement. If you know a Canberra Legend please contact me on gai.brodtmann.mp@aph.gov.au or 6293 1344.

In addition, I’ll continue with my highly successful School Legends program. School Legends recognises young Canberrans who have overcome adversity or disadvantage to achieve their goals. I’ve met some extraordinary Canberrans during the three years of this program. And I’ve been overwhelmed by the feedback from parents and teachers about how it has changed the lives and boosted the self-esteem of these young people. In coming weeks I will write to every Canberra school to invite nominations, and look forward to presenting the awards at the end of the year.

I am humbled and excited about my second term as the Member for Canberra. Thank you Canberra for putting your trust in me. I will work hard for you and continue to stand up for Canberra.
