Further cuts will erode Defence capability

Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Gai Brodtmann is extremely concerned about the Department of Defence’s shrinking workforce after a fresh round of redundancies were announced yesterday.

Redundancies will be offered to senior Defence staff, from EL1 to SES level.

“This latest round of redundancies targets some of our most highly skilled and experienced federal public servants, who are a vital element to the overall success of our military operations and capability,” Ms Brodtmann said.

“I’m particularly concerned about the potential loss of Defence knowledge and whether this will result in a capability gap.

“The Abbott Government has already slashed more than 2,400 civilian jobs from Defence.

“Any further job losses have the potential to significantly erode capability.

“Targeting senior civilian Defence personnel is short sighted and may also result in higher projects costs and schedule overruns, as well as damaging workplace morale.

“With this latest round of job cuts, Mr Abbott has once again shown the only job he has any regard for is his own.”
