Federal Member for Canberra Gai Brodtmann is urging all Canberrans to talk about organ donation with their loved ones, as part of DonateLife Week 2015.
At any one time in Australia there are 1600 people in need of an organ donation - and just one organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people.
“I am a very strong advocate for organ and tissue donation having been a director of the Gift of Life board and founder of the Parliamentary Friends of Organ and Tissue Donation,” Ms Brodtmann said.
“I have seen firsthand the difference that transplantation can make to those who have been incredibly ill.
“I have also seen the difference it can make to families who take that enormous and difficult decision to donate their loved one's organs. Many of them gain comfort knowing that something good has come from a sudden, unexpected and tragic death.
“I urge all Canberrans to talk about their wishes with their loved ones.
“In 2014, the ACT had the fourth highest donation rate out of all the states and territories. I’d like to see us leading this statistic.
“Have the conversation now. Discover, decide and discuss organ and tissue donation.”
Registering your decision can be done simply by visiting your local Medicare office, visiting www.donatelife.gov.au or by phoning the Australian Organ Donor Registry on 1800 777 203.
