Member for Canberra, Gai Brodtmann MP, says that employees of the Department of Defence are nervous in the wake of comments by the new Minister for Defence Senator David Johnston yesterday.
“Senator Johnston said yesterday that the Department of Defence is ‘too heavy’ and needs to be ‘trimmed,’” Ms Brodtmann said.
“Understandably, employees of the Department, including 10,000 based in here Canberra, would like to know what this means for them.
“The Senator should come clean about how many jobs he plans on ‘trimming’ from the Department.
“Are these part of the 12,000 – 20,000 public service job cuts promised by Prime Minister Abbott prior to the election? Or are they additional cuts?
“How are these jobs going to be cut? Only through natural attrition, as promised prior to the election? Or can we expect to see redundancies?
“The new Abbott Government has announced some significant cuts and changes to the public service since its swearing in, but it is yet to provide any detail about what these cuts and changes will actually mean for public servants. “Public servants, as well as Canberra businesses that will also be affected by cuts, deserve more certainty than this.”
